Resources To Quit Tobacco Use @ Rice University

Quitting tobacco use (either cigarettes, vape pens, cigars, or chewing tobacco) is not easy, but you can do it!  Health is the number one reason people stop tobacco use, but your particular reason may vary.  The important first step is to find information and resources to help you on this journey, and we’re here to help.

Rice offers different options:

  • Faculty and staff can receive free smoking cessation prescription medications through the Rice-sponsored health plans, and can also visit the benefits website for information on upcoming smoking cessation and other healthy lifestyle programs.  The EAP program may also have resources for you, including counseling, in your quest to end tobacco use.
  • Faculty and staff who are benefits eligible can also use Pelago (formerly Quit Genius), a free service to help you quit or reduce tobacco use.
  • In general, the Internet offers a wide range of resources to assist you on your tobacco-free journey.  Below are some trusted websites:
    • http://betobaccofree.hhs.gov/ – the Health and Human Services’ (HHS) comprehensive website providing one-stop access to current tobacco-related information from across its agencies.
    • CDC’s Tobacco Use Website – CDC is the lead federal agency for comprehensive tobacco control. CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health provides national leadership for a broad-based approach to reducing tobacco use. A variety of government agencies, professional and voluntary organizations, and academic institutions have joined together to advance this approach, and this website contains information consolidated from all of these resources.
    • Guide to Quit Smoking– The American Cancer Society’s resources to help you stop smoking.
    • Freedom from Smoking® Online Program – Evidenced based on-line program from the American Lung Association consisting of eight self-paced modules, each containing four lessons, and an interactive message board to assist you in quitting tobacco.
    • Become an Ex – The EX plan teaches you how to live life without cigarettes in 3 steps – all geared to help make the seemingly impossible possible.
    • Quit Tobacco-Make Everyone Proud – Online program from the Department of Defense for US military service members and Veterans.
